Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The Malda Government Railway Police (GRP) seized 4.46 kilograms of brown sugar, valued at approximately ₹2.3 crore, from a passenger aboard the Down Vivek Express at Malda Town Station. The drugs were found hidden inside the folds of a blanket the passenger was carrying. This seizure follows a tip-off received by the GRP, leading to a targeted search of the train upon its arrival at Malda Town.
The passenger, a resident of Kaliacg, Malda, was traveling from Manipur. He had boarded the Vivek Express at Dibrugarh in Assam and was heading to Malda. During a preliminary search at Malda Town Station, nothing suspicious was found on the passenger. However, when the blanket he was carrying was inspected, multiple packets of brown sugar were uncovered, hidden meticulously within the blanket’s folds.
The brown sugar seized weighed 4.46 kg, with an estimated street value of ₹2.3 crore. GRP officials confirmed that the drugs were concealed in small packets, which were not detectable in an initial routine check. After finding the drugs, the passenger was immediately arrested and taken into custody for questioning.
The GRP has initiated a detailed investigation into the case. Authorities are examining the source and intended destination of the drugs. The police are also exploring potential links to larger narcotic trafficking networks operating in the region. The arrested individual was presented before a court, and further legal proceedings are underway. This seizure marks a significant operation in the ongoing effort to curb narcotics trafficking through rail routes in the area.
